Hi Amy...great read. I think there might be a hidden future story involving your family and ex being in shock over the fact you quit. Hope all is well.....Bob

I am so glad you reshared this post, Amy, as we have that in common, too. I became sober at 61, now over 2.5 years ago, and it was the best gift I ever gave myself. Without the sobriety, I wouldn't have had the clarity to see I needed to leave my marriage and been able to find the courage to do it. Without the sobriety, I wouldn't have had the commitment to see through my long postponed desire to write more creatively and to publish that writing--including writing about my own breakup with Al Cohol, that bad boy Al. It does feel really good, doesn't it? And if we're drinking n/a bubbly at our children's weddings, I for one will feel no less festive or celebratory, hitting the dance floor with vengeance and embarrassing my daughters all the same--perhaps, you too? Oh, and so many of the books you read that year I loved too. Writers & Lovers by Lily King, especially.

Hi Amy, thanks so much for reading and sharing! Sobriety really did bring so much clarity into my life, too. So many things that never made sense suddenly became very clear. And my life has changed so much (for the better) because of it. I'm so glad you broke up with that horrible boyfriend, too. The daughter of one of my dearest friends was married last summer and my feet were KILLING at the end of the night from all my (sober) dancing. I guess I was warming up for my own kids' weddings. ;)

So glad you reshared! I read it out loud to Mike as we drove doing errands. And then we had a discussion on how crazy it is that alcohol is perceived to make life more fun.

Megan, I love that you read it to Mike. ;) I know, drinking is definitely celebrated and romanticized in our culture, and i some places more than others. I thought it was so interesting (and awesome) when I was in Maine that almost every menu (even at an oyster farm), there were N/A options. There are even a couple of N/A microbreweries. When I commented on that to a bartender, she said, "Well, so many people don't drink nowadays." But in my other travels this fall, that has not been the case. Maybe it's a trend that just hasn't made its way everywhere yet? xo
